EMAILS OF THE WEEK (concerning the San Diego Comic-Con and my Life's Little Vics in New Orleans strip)...

>Thanks for your latest comic. That's the most accurate one anyone's done about this city since the storm. Add to the list: the grocery store's open, then the store's open at night, then it's open late at night, then hey, there are no piles of debris on my street. Victories such as this give us hope.

R. in New Orleans

>Keith,

I wanted to take the opportunity to thank you for my "Life's Little Victory". I'm sorry I missed you later on, and could not thank you personally, but we kept missing you when we went by your table. You did an excellent job, and I am pleased to own another piece of your work. (last year we bought a drawing you did of a baby drinking a Triple Latte...) My Little Victory will be framed and placed near the computer where I saved the thesis right before the power went out.

I am really proud to have this piece of art. Thanks again!

Cheers!

W

>Keef,

It was good to get a chance to meet you at Comic-Con. I was the short guy with the goatee and 15 year old son you talked with for a bit about New Orleans on Sat. afternoon. You gave my son one of your "shadow government" stickers and he loved that and I got a copy of "What A Long Strange Strip It's Been". Anyway ... talking with you gave me a couple of "Life's Little Victories" moments:

1. You go to Comic-Con and run across one of your favorite comic artists, who you didn't expect to be there, and he's a nice guy!
2. You go to Comic-Con and run across one of your favorite comic artists and you don't go all fan-boy on him.
and unrelated to meeting you:
3. You go to Comic-Con and find a comic that you loved as a kid and it's only $2.50!

I'll be looking to see you again next year and thanks for reminding me that there are still liberals out there (living in Orange County, CA, it is sometimes easy to forget).

*SAN DIEGO COMIC-CON WRAP-UP..
Or should i say "Rap-Up"? Shook hands with one of my favorite folks in Hip-Hop, Mr. Chuck D of Public Enemy, when he walked by my table in the small press section at the Con. Not totally sure, but he seemed to know who I was...Wow.

Also, as we were waiting to get on the elevator after checking in at our swanky (free!) hotel. Snoop Dogg strolled off the elevator with about 8 dudes. Rock!!

Other celeb sightings: That comedian that was on "the Show", and did that comedy tour documentary show with Patton Oswalt and Zach Garafilnakis (I can't spell his name for the life of me)..One of the Wayans Bros. on the street with some white chick trying to jump on him. Also, in L.A.: Cuba Gooding Jr. at Kinko's talking about thongs and pancake batter and former Laker/Celtic/Mr. Vanessa Williams Rick Fox on Venice Beach...

The Comic-Con is a completely different animal now compared to just a few years ago. 120,000 people. It's big-time Hollywood....But it's still really great. The place was packed even on Wednesday's Preview Night, which used to be a time when the exhibitor could go around the floor and check out some of the stuff before the public does. Not any more.

The new bigger, stronger, sexier canvas bags were a big hit!! And the new 2007 calendars were snapped up, too. Look for both on the site soon...

But the biggest hit was the Beginner's Guide to Community-Based Arts. Sold out of 'em. folks couldn't get enough of 'em. I caught somebody in the bathroom doing things with the Beginner's Guide in (left) hand.

Highlights:
-Maine Lobster night at Ye Ole Madrid with Garrett Izumi and Stevie Notley (Behold! the Grassy Knoll!)
-Swanky free hotel room at the Omni!!
-Some 6.6 dude with the ultimate Chewbacca costume, lifting tiny children up on his shoulder for pictures (Made me wish I was a kid again!!)
-Hangin' with Kyle Baker
-Somebody suggesting I put my public access T.V. show, Bruno MacPush, on DVD!!

*GITTIN' READY FOR THE SAN DIEGO COMIC CON NEXT WEEK...
Working like a dog to get some new product together. Expect bigger, stronger, sexier canvas bags, new card designs and the 2007 Life's Little Vics/(th)ink/K Chronicles calendar.

The San Diego Comic Con is happenin' from Weds. July 19 to Sun. July 23th at the San Diego Convention Center. Also on Friday July 21 at 8pm, the 3rd annual "Nappy Hour" at the Tivoli Bar. 506 6th.

See you there!!

BUT WHAT ABOUT A NEW BOOK?
I've been putting together the latest (th)ink collection. The strips are picked, cleaned up and ready to go. Now I just gotta think of a title and cover design. I hope to have the book ready to go in mid-fall, just in time for the holidaze...

*ABOUT THIS WEEK'S MURDERBALL STRIP..

Yeah, it was an honor to run into those dudes at the Denver airport. Unfortunately, the camera I took the pics with was in a bag where some liquid was spilled..I haven't attempted to develop the pics, but I'm sure they're spoiled.

The good thing is that Mark Zupan pulled out his digital camera and took one, too. He said he'd email it to me after they got back from their tournament. Nice!!

Oh, and if you haven't seen it. Rent "Murderball". It's good.

*E-MISSIVE FROM K CHRONICLES READER IN NEW ORLEANS..

hey man,

hope you got back to yer cozy san francisco all right. It was
fun meeting you (by the way, the red beans got SO MUCH BETTER the
older they got - the beans totally creamed out and got all thick, and
it almost came down to a fist fight between E. and I over who got
to eat the last bowl), feedin' you, world cuppin' it with you, and
showing you around St. Bernard and the 9th Ward. Thanks so much for
following through on my invitation.

The missus and I are leaving for ALASKA tomorrow morning. If I come
across any human skulls that look vaguely Treadwellian during our
journey, I'll be sure to send them your way. More likely, we'll be
eaten by bears ourselves.

How about that guy... sure, some things should have never been caught
on camera ("you're such a big bear! Yes you are! You're such a big
bear!"), but I shudder to think the things they'd find if I had a
camera on me for all of my waking moments. At least he found adventure
and a sense of purpose for himself, which most people never come close
to. It's friggin unbelievable that he survived as long as he did. Yes,
I think he anthropomorphized the bears to an extreme extent, but he
understood their intentions, personalities, and "culture", I guess you
could call it. The bear that killed him, he knew it was the most
dangerous and desperate one out there. But he survived for so long
among them. He lived as long as most bears do in the wild. The
tragedy is the woman he was with; I wish we knew more about her
story.

I've been keeping up with the world cup since that game we watched.
Poor Germany, losing like that to Italy in the last two minutes of
overtime. How's the wifey taking it? My condolences.

take care, and best of luck,

j.

(J. done hooked me up with some serious red beans and rice [which was delicious right from the start]..
Turns out his Mama had an award-winning recipe..)

*EXTRA!! EXTRA!! I'LL BE PERFORMING AT THE 2006 AFRO SOLO THEATRE FESTIVAL IN AUGUST..

Details coming soon!!

*EMAIL OF THE WEEK..

>Hi K,
I have been readinig your comic for years and love it. I have
travelled the opposite route of you, living in SF after college before
eventually moving here to Jamaica Plain in Boston. There are some
similiarities to the cities, but walking around Washington Square in
North Beach on a sunny day cannot be topped. Your stories remind me of
my bachelorhood time there and my marriage life here.

Regarding you most recent comic, I saw Raiders of the Lost Ark at
Coolidge Corner followed by a shot by shot remake done by three boys
over a span of years, from when they were 12 to 17. Have you seen
this? It is unreal, amazing, and had the sold out audience laughing
in that wonderment way "oh my god how did they do that" and probably
like me, thinking back to their youth and roleplayiing in the backyard
and seeing their kid peers taking it to a new level. There's a bar
fire and a submarine. Five minute standing ovation for the director
in attendance. Maybe you have some sway and can get Castro Theatre to
show them both.

*REACTION TO (TH)INK'S ADDITION TO THE S.F. CHRONICLE..

>Hi, Keith, just wanted to say it's cool seeing your work in the Chron's new 96 hours section. I sent an email to the editor awhile back saying the strip they were currently running was lame. I suggested that if they were going to run a strip in that part of the paper, it should be by a San Francisco artist, like Keith Knight. I don't know if they listened or what, but I think it's cool you're in there. :-)

Take care.

-R.
