The Other Black Cartoonist(s)
Man, if I had a nickel for every time
somebody mistook me for the creator of The Boondocks, I'd have
$2.35!! But I kid when I say I'm the other black
cartoonist: Kyle Baker, Morrie Turner, Robb Armstrong, Charles Gary, Darrin
Bell, Barbara Brandon-Croft, Jerry Craft, Stephen Bently, Lance Tooks...
There are plenty more of us out there, in yer homes, on your fridges...
But All Jokes Aside, Keith Knight has been recognized for his work as outstanding creator of African American descent: he won the 2007 Glyph Award and the 2006 Glyph Award for best comic strip by a black creator. The award is named for the Glyphs blog, which provides news & commentary about comics with black themes: "The Glyph Comics Awards recognize the best in comics made by, for, and about people of color from the preceding calendar year. While it is not exclusive to black creators, it does strive to honor those who have made the greatest contributions to the comics medium in terms of both critical and commercial impact. By doing so, the goal is to encourage more diverse and high quality work across the board and to inspire new creators to add their voices to the field." Keef likes to joke about it, because much of his fan mail actually comes from 53-year-old white males. In honor of all the "other" amazing black newspaper cartoonists, we are currently putting together a list with links that we will publish here shortly... Check back soon!!
