*BACK FROM NEW ORLEANS…
..And man, was it an eye-opening experience.

Driving in from the airport, seeing the infamous Superdome gave me a real creeped out feeling. This was my first visit to the Crescent City in two years.

Every house was marked with the spray-painted “X” and some info that let people know what the condition was of each residence.

I was in town for the American Librarian Association’s national convention. Thousands of librarians and the people who want to sell them stuff converged on the New Orleans Convention Center for five days of fun and excitement.

It was the first major convention since Katrina, so folks were really watching to see if the City could pull it off. And from my perspective, they did an incredible job.

The town had significantly less folks than the less time I was here. But those who remain and/or came back are determined to bring New Orleans back…althought the task is daunting. I accompanied my bud Mat to some community meetings about opening schools and creating decent space for the children of NOLA. So much energy and deternination…DESPITE the ineptitude of the government . Also, plenty of stories of opportunists ripping off locals for construction work and other things…

Big props to Anti-Gravity Magazine mogul Leo McGovern for hooking up a slideshow date for me on Friday night. The event at handsome Willy’s was well attended, well received, many books were sold..many drinks consumed. Thanks to everyone who came by.

Thanks to the good folks at Consortium Distribution for letting (co-author of “Beginner’s Guide..”) Mat Schwarzman and me promote the book all day on Saturday.

Thanks to Joey for giving me a tour of St. Bernard’s Parish (where the levee broke)..Unbelievable. And Joey said it was really cleaned up compared to the last time he was there. Heavy. (Picture’s soon)

Thanks to Cafe Unique for feeding me daily whilst providing a large screen T.V. for my World Cup watching enjoyment.

Food: Roast Beef Po-Boy at R& O’s in Metairie. Blackened Catfish at Fiorella’s. Ribs, Chicken, Jambalaya and Hubig’s pie at Verdi Marte.
