*REVIEW OF LIVE MARGINAL PROPHETS EP:

Dead Hippie Bootleg by The Marginal Prophets [link]. This live CD leans more towards the funk side of Keith Knight’s band than the rock side. When I saw them play, it was the reverse, but here, at least, I can focus a bit more on their lyrics. On the one hand, you’ve got songs like “Gunz’n’Money” that talk about the subculture of violence and its insidious nature. On the other, you’ve got songs like “Best Lover,” which happily espouses the virtues of self-pleasuring. It all adds up to a mighty sweet-sounding groove – any band that can name-drop Rosencrantz and Guildenstern and The 400 Blows in their rhymes is worth listening to. B+
